SECONDARY PHASE

Applying what you know to a growing complexity of contexts

Learners by now should be familiar with arithmetical processes and the secondary phase is focused on further developing the concepts of additive and multiplicative relationships in various contexts whilst appreciating that much of mathematics at this stage is interconnected and procedures that can be used in one aspect can also be used in other areas in exactly the same way. Key to much of the development in this phase will be underpinned by a growing fluency in algebra.

Being able to complete mathematical procedures is one thing but young mathematicians also need to further enhance their problem solving skills. Learners should be given ample opportunity to explore unfamiliar situations in a variety of contexts both independently and collaboratively. They should be encouraged to explain their thinking  verbally in a logical and reasoned way as well as producing more formal written solutions.
